well

யோவான்: 17நீர்,என்னை அனுப்பினீர் என்று விசுவாசித்திருக்கிறார்கள்.9. நான் அவர்களுக்காக வேண்டிக்கொள்ளுகிறேன்; உலகத்துக்காக வேண்டிக்கொள்ளாமல், நீர்எனக்குத் தந்தவர்களுக்காக வேண்டிக்கொள்ளுகிறேன்;

    ganesan says
//. Not even single verse is added or removed from the Holy Bible. It has been tested by time and lots of scholars.//

    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0060859512

Go and check the above book.

Misquoting Jesus: The Story Behind Who Changed the Bible and Why

It is written by the top most New testament scholor in America.

Top 10 Verses that were not Originally in the New Testament

1 John 5:7 – There are three that bear witness in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit, and these three are one.

One of the more famous stories in the Bible is the “Let he who is without sin cast the first stone…” incident. The next two verses that Ehrman lists are from the same encounter (from which I quote at length in the block quote).

John 8:7 – Let the one who is without sin among you be the first to cast a stone at her.

John 8:11 – Neither do I condemn you. Go and sin no more.

    John 8:1-11 (NRSV)

while Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. Early in the morning he came again to the temple. All the people came to him and he sat down and began to teach them. The scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in adultery; and making her stand before all of them, they said to him, ‘Teacher, this woman was caught in the very act of committing adultery. Now in the law Moses commanded us to stone such women. Now what do you say?’ They said this to test him, so that they might have some charge to bring against him. Jesus bent down and wrote with his finger on the ground. When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, ‘Let anyone among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.’ And once again he bent down and wrote on the ground. When they heard it, they went away, one by one, beginning with the elders; and Jesus was left alone with the woman standing before him. Jesus straightened up and said to her, ‘Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?’ She said, ‘No one, sir.’ And Jesus said, ‘Neither do I condemn you. Go your way, and from now on do not sin again.’

I was expecting as a result of my brief article: “Jesus: Unoriginal Moral Thinker” for someone to have mentioned this story from the Gospel of John. So far, I haven’t had it claimed as a response to the implicit challenge that Jesus never really taught anything original — and the things that were original were immoral (for example, a thought-crime is equivalent to the actual crime).

If someone had mentioned the “cast the first stone” as an original moral, I would pointed out two problems. First, this story, which only appears in the Gospel of John, is a later addition. Not only does Ehrman make this point, but so does the Harper Collins Study Bible:

“The most ancient authorities lack 7.53—8.11; other authorities add the passage here or after 7.36 or after 21.25 or after Luke 21.38, with variations of text; some mark the passage as doubtful. Scholars generally agree that this story was not originally part of the Gospel of John.“ (My emphasis added) – p 1830 Harper Collins Study Bible (which I recommend if you are serious about having a scholarly Bible for reference).

The second problem is that it’s pretty hard to get a moral principle out of the story that is useful: don’t punish people unless you have never done anything wrong, ever?

Seriously though, think of how pervasive the story of ‘casting the first stone’ is in society — it is one of the most popular stories of the entire Bible — and it was not in the original Gospel account!

Luke 22:44 – In his anguish Jesus began to pray more earnestly, and his sweat became like great drops of blood falling to the ground.

Luke 22:20 – And in the same way after supper Jesus took the cup and said, “This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood.”

The following two verses form the basis of my essay: Ridiculous Ending to the Gospel of Mark. This essay gives an explicit example of how I would steer the conversation if the person I was arguing with did not believe that the ending to the Gospel of Mark was a later addition.

Mark 16:17 – These signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will cast out demons and they will speak with new tongues.

Mark 16:18 – And they will take up snakes in their hands, and if they drink any poison it will not harm them, and they will lay their hands on the sick and they will become well.

The last three verses round out the top ten:

John 5:4 – For an angel of the Lord went down at certain times into the pool and disturbed the waters; and whoever was the first to step in when the water was disturbed was healed of whatever disease he had.

Luke 24:12 – But Peter rose up and ran to the tomb, and stooping down to look in, he saw the linen clothes by themselves. And he went away to his own home, marveling at what had happened.

Luke 24:51 – And when Jesus blessed them he departed from them and he was taken up into heaven.

It’s worthwhile to go through each of these verses and think about the implications of each verse that was added. Being well-versed in the history of the Bible is very useful knowledge to have if you want to engage people.

    Study up and get out

Mark’s Novel ends 16.8

The last twelve verses, 16:9–20, are not present in the fourth century manuscripts Sinaiticus and Vaticanus, the earliest complete manuscripts of Mark.

These are later additions.

But let us see how the Mark 16:8 ends.

16:8 And they went out quickly, and fled from the sepulchre; for they trembled and were amazed: neither said they any thing to any man; for they were afraid.

That is it. The women who saw the empty tomb told no one. This is a heroic fiction. It ends like that. That is all.

Then once it becomes a religion, the people who make money out of this, the churchman, want to add additions to this so that the information is told lot of people and the Jesus appears to the people. The jesus appearing to people is NOT in the original historic novel.

Get it?

//The Isreal mentioned here is need to be the actuall Jews.
Israel – which we get from the Greek, is originally in the Hebrew, “Yisrael”.
Yisrael means, quite literally, “He has striven with God,” or “He has been saved by God,” based on which translation of “sra” was meant to be used.

//

As Ashok seems not to understand tamil, let me continue in English

Israel is always written as Yisrael in Hebrew and Greek. So “Yisrael Beiteinu” is a political party in Israel.

The twisted meaning of “He has striven with God” is usual twisted logic of Christians to justify their folly.

// hundred and forty and four thousand of all the tribes of the children of Israel. //

let us replace his translation into the above text

// hundred and forty and four thousand of all the tribes of the children of he has striven with god. //

Does this make sense?

So whoever is tribe of the children of the people who have striven for god will go into heaven?

What a nonsense!

//These are they which were not defiled with women; for they are virgins//

If they are virgins, how can they have children who will go to the heaven?

So the only meaning is “hundred and forty and four thousand of all the tribes of the children of Israel.” and israel denotes only Israel, and no such replacement as dreamed by the missionary ganesan is allowed. Poor guy!

//After these things I looked, and behold, a great multitude which no one could number, of all nations, tribes, peoples, and tongues, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, with palm branches in their hands.//

multitude is nothing but the dispersed jews who were dispersed by the war into various nations of that world. Jews Who speak greek and many different languages.

Same case with the “dogs” connotation to the Syrophenician woman in Mark. Mark writes a heroic fiction where the Jewish hero (jesus) is killed. That becomes a religion later. Then the Luke and others rewrite the Mark to be palatable to the non jews.

See this even the christian preachers know that.

http://johnharmstrong.typepad.com/john_h_armstrong_/2009/01/pearls-swine-and-forced-character-formation.html

//Dogs and swine were Jewish terms of contempt used for Gentiles.//

But they somehow try to reinterpret the jewish words into something that would look good for this jebus jew fellow.

When Jesus said these words in the historic novel, the writer and the character should have been fully aware of the implications of these words in that context. But these missionaries who write in Ganesan name want to display a decent meaning to these words. Crazy people.

No doubt that Indians are suckers.

“The idea of a Universal Deity does not exist for most of the Biblical period; and every religion including YAWHism alest implicitly acnowledged the existance of other Gods (who however, tended to be impotent outside the boundaries of their own realms. Under these circumstances it was inevitable that a covenant of Israel enterend in to which Yahweh would focus on possession of the Land, the “promissed Land andthat this possession would ratify the exclusiveness of the relationship with their Diety in a very material way. The Biblical picture of a promissed Land is a strangly idealised one(for Eg.inthe allocation of Palestine to the different tribes, or the fixation as up on “Mount Zopm” a PLACE THAT OWE MORE TO THE IMAGINATION OF THE PROPHETS THAN TO THE TOPOGRAPHY OF JERUSALEM-
” Bible as Literature” , Oxford University Press

And what Scholars says

“Though most of this material is familiar to Scholars and specialists in the Fields, it is seldom made available to the wider Public and even when it does find its way into the books on the early Christian movement, it does not play a Major role in shaping our view of Christianity.”
Page – xi-xii, Professor L.Wiken, Professor of History of Christianity –Notre dame University; Published by Yale University Press.

“In contrast to the “Keep them Ignorant” policy, Protestantism has often, though not always, empasised literacy so that people could read the bible. The result was an enormous splintering of Protestantism. As people read, they also interpreted and often their interpretation was different from their Superiors, their denomination etd., So they started their Own Denomination.
There are over 20,280 Christian Denominations in the world most of them Protestant, many of them based on some Variant interpretation of Bible”
Pate 13,14. “Authority, The Bible Who needs it-“ Henry O.Thompson- Practising Pastor & visiting Professor of Jordan University.

“Surely God almighty could have found a less Blood thirst way of getting the Hebrews out of Egypt than murdering the Egyptian First Born (I am a First Born son, and I have a first born child) and killing the pursuing Forces of Pharaoh – a little sand storm would have stopped them with dry feet on the western shore. The vast Majority of those Egyptian mothers and fathers had nothing and to do with keeping the Hebrews in Egypt. Why should innocent Children be murdered and Parents suffer such loss when God himself hastened Pharaoh’s heart to keep the Hebrew there”

Rev 22:15 For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie.

The level of Indian Education and Trade was much Higher than before the arrival of Missionaries and Christian Church.
I quote from Betrend Russel, Nobel Price winner
“You find as you look around the world, that every single bit of progress in humane feeling, every improvement in the Criminal Law, every step towards the diminution of war, every step towards better treatment of the Coloured races, or every mitigation of Slavery, every progress that there has been in the world, has been consistently opposed by the organized church. Churches in the world, I Say quiet deliberately that the Christian religion, as recoginised in its Churches has been and still is the principal enemy of moral progress in the world.”

-Noble Price Winner and most Renowned Philosphy Professor of 20th Century in his “Why I am not Christian”

A Prediction that this would be the case for the Israelites was put in to the mouth of Moses at the end of Deuteronomy. P-67

Finkelstein, Israel, and Silberman, Neil Asher, The Bible Unearthed : Archaeology’s New Vision of Ancient Israel and the Origin of Its Sacred Texts, Simon & Schuster 2002, ISBN 0-684-86912-8

There are many Gods in Bible and Lord is only for Israel. Lord cannot make Abraham in Babylon(Iraq) or
Moses and co in Egypt. LORD would be effective in Israel

If Biblical Language can be used if these Gods of neighbouring countries can be called
then Israel’ அருவருப்பாகியவர் கர்த்தர்.

Fear God and Truth

Says: in my blog
    December 9, 2009 at 1:14 pm |
    சகோதரர் சில்சாம்,
    தேவப்பிரியாவின் எழுத்தையும் உங்களுடைய பதிலையும் படித்தேன். குழப்பமே மிஞ்சியது.

    //லுக்கா கதாசிரியர் ஒரு யூதரல்லாதவர், கிரேக்கப் சிரிய பெனிசிய பெண்ணிடமன சம்பவத்தில் ஏசு யூதரல்லாதவர்களை நாய் என்பதையும் வீட்டினர் சிந்தும் எச்சிலை உண்பதும் என்பவை மிகுந்த வேதனை தருபவை -அருவருப்பானவை என்பது உணர்ந்து நீக்கி விட்டார்.//

    இது தேவப்பிரியாவின் கருத்து மட்டுமே என்று சொல்லவியலாது. சமீபகாலத்து புதிய ஏற்பாட்டு ஆய்வாளர்கள் எல்லோருமே யூதரல்லாதவர்களை நாய்கள் என்று இயேசு சொல்வதை சால்ஜாப்பு சொல்லி மழுப்ப முயல்கிறார்கள்.

    ஆனால் நீங்கள் சொல்வது என்னவென்றால், அந்த கிரேக்க பெண்மணியை சோதிக்க இயேசு சொல்வதாக கூறுகிறீர்கள்.

    ஆனால் அடுத்த வரி அப்படி அல்ல என்று நிரூபிக்கிறதே..
    //‘இஸ்ரயேல் குலத்தாருள் காணாமற்போன ஆடுகளாய் இருப்போரிடமே நான் அனுப்பப் பட்டேன் ‘ //

    இது இயேசு சொன்னதுதானே? அப்படியானால், இயேசு பொய் சொன்னாரா? இயேசு பொய் சொல்லவே மாட்டார் என்றால், இது உண்மை என்றுதானே பொருள்? அப்படியானால், இயேசு யூதர்களுக்காகத்தான் வந்தாக சொல்கிறாரே அன்றி தமிழர்களுக்கோ இந்தியர்களுக்கோ வந்ததாக நாமாக கூறிக்கொள்கிறோம் என்றுதானே பொருள்? கிரேக்க பெண்மணிக்கு விளக்கம் கொடுப்பதற்காக இப்படி பொய் சொன்னார் என்று சொல்கிறீர்களா? அப்படி பொய் பேசுவது இயேசுவுக்கு முறையாகுமா? ஏன் இப்படி பொய் சொல்லி ஒரு விஷயத்தை விளக்குவானேன்? நேரடியாக, “யூதர்கள் யூதரல்லாதவர்களை நாய்கள் என்று கூறுகிறார்கள். நான் அப்படி கூறமாட்டேன். நீயும் என் அன்புக்கு பாத்திரமானவளே. உன் குழந்தையை நான் குணப்படுத்துவேன்” என்று கூறியிருந்தால் சரியான விளக்கமாக இருந்திருக்குமே?

    ஒரு கடவுளே ஆனாலும், தமிழர்களை நாய்கள் என்று கூறுபவரை எப்படி வணங்குவது? போற்றுவது?

    இல்லை அவர் பொய் சொன்னார், அவர் எல்லோருக்காகவும்தான் வந்தார் என்று நீங்கள் சொல்கிறீர்களா?

    நீங்கள் எழுதுவது சால்ஜாப்பு செய்வது மாதிரிதான் தோன்றுகிறது.

No one has eaten this including Paul or this Words are Fraud by the Author or Jesus is a Fraud. Please show me one person who is living without death in earth.

Remember this Law-

The Existing Church of Sepulcher (கல்லறை சர்ச்) location was not known to church till 4th Century is History, and entire Gospel stories are myths.

Contrasting Accounts  of Jesus

To modern eyes, Jesus of Nazareth is presented as a prophet, teacher, healer, social revolutionary – even God. This Jesus the Christ seemingly has his act together. We view a composite, unified portrait – witness the many Renaissance paintings of a pale, gaunt, stoic and glassy-eyed Savior.

Jesus is the same – yesterday, today and forever. There is harmony of the gospels – an ability to weave disparate accounts together forming a single, coherent tapestry of Jesus’ birth, ministry, death and resurrection.

In addition to the Gospel of Thomas, other non-canonical gospels that have been reviewed include the Secret Book of James, Dialogue of the Saviour, Gospel of Mary, Infancy Gospel of Thomas, Infancy Gospel of James, Gospel of the Hebrews, Gospel of the Ebionites, Gospel of the Nazarean, and several other fragmentary gospel manuscript sources.

Is it really this easy?

Is the Jesus of Matthew the same as the Jesus portrayed in Luke? What about the gospels of Mark and John? What happens if we step outside the bounds of accepted New Testament, to include other largely contemporaneous albeit non-canonical Christian gospels?

What happens when we confine our gaze to the writings of just a single author? Can the teachings and actions of Jesus be considered as internally consistent when viewed from the perspective of Matthew alone? Or Mark? Or Luke? Or John?

Approach to Contrasting Accounts
Rather than starting from the premise that there is a harmony inherent to the New Testament, we take the opposite tack. The hypothesis at the core of this research is that the story of Jesus is not necessarily one of consistency and harmony, but rather more an account of contradiction and conflict.

Presented is evidence of conflicting interpretations for Jesus – organized around a series of 24 different topics. The first 6 topics compare the narrative structure with which the Jesus story is told – from birth to death and resurrection. The next 18 topics address contrasting viewpoints covering 18 separate theological topics – ranging from role of charity in Jesus’ ministry to Jesus’ acceptance of women.

Structure

  • Birth of Jesus – by mention or more complete description
  • Healing Miracles – reported curing of physical or psychological illnesses by Jesus
  • Nature Miracles – involving apparent supernatural control over empirically observed physical laws of nature
  • Parables – examples of the unique stories and allegories spoken by Jesus
  • Death of Jesus – by mention or more complete description
  • Resurrection – similarly by mention or more complete description

Content & Viewpoints

  • Charity – emphasis on actions and sayings of Jesus out of love for others, particularly those viewed as disenfranchised within the society of the time
  • Disciples – whether the twelve chosen are portrayed in a positive way
  • Divinity of Jesus – notably whether Jesus is identified as God
  • Economy of Redistribution – indicating support for distributing financial or other material resources to the disenfranchised
  • Eschatology – denoting emphasis on prophesy including apocalyptic descriptions (of the end times)
  • Gentiles – whether Jesus explicitly indicated acceptance
  • Heaven – identification as an after-life with God
  • Hell – identification as an afterlife separated from God (or as other terms translated by various Bible versions for Hell)
  • Kingdom of God Now – with emphasis on the degree to which the kingdom is available on earth during human existence
  • Message Ambivalence – denoting apparent inconsistencies in the teachings or actions of Jesus
  • Messiah – representing Jesus as the fulfillment of Jewish prophecy as the anointed of God.
  • Prophecy Historicized – involving claims of Old Testament prophecy fulfillment by Jesus
  • Prophecy Projected – with claims made by Jesus of future conditions subsequent to his death and resurrection
  • Salvation – specifically linked to the concepts of faith and grace
  • Social Revolution – based on whether Jesus is portrayed as advocating changes in governmental or political structures (outside the spiritual sphere)
  • Torah Law – whether adherence was explicitly advocated by Jesus
  • Wisdom & Word – portrayal of Jesus in these spiritual/non-material terms
  • Women – based on whether Jesus explicitly advocated equal or compensatory treatment

Each of these topics is covered from the perspective, first, of the four canonical gospel writers, then from the New Testament epistles of Paul and James, then from Thomas and the other so-called non-canonical gospels.

Of the Pauline gospels, we rely primarily on epistles to the Romans, Corinthians, and Galatians as most widely ascribed to Paul’s authorship by scholars and theologians of all stripes. For John’s writings, focus is on the fourth gospel, since authorship of the Johannine epistles and the Apocalypse (Revelation) has been more widely disputed.

At-A-Glance Overview
Pages of discussion can be summarized at a glance – by a one-page chart illustrating the contrasting accounts of Jesus.

table1.gif

tab1legend.gif

Each account is assessed based on the degree to which the characteristic expressed appears to fit (or correspond) with the account of each account. Those identified asgood fit are books which appear to strongly support or endorse the concept or characteristic considered.

A partial fit is noted for books where a case can be made, but the evidence is more scant or inferential (rather than explicit). And those indicated as little or no fit indicate writings that either directly contradict or simply do not have any reference to a particular characteristic.

In a few cases, question marks (?) are noted. In these situations, the text and its application are more uncertain – or may be ambivalent with opinions both pro and con expressed.

This at-a-glance chart reveals both strong similarities between some accounts of the Jesus story as well as definite differences. There is virtually no topic for which complete unanimity of opinion can be found across sources for which comparisons have been made.

On issues of structure, there is general consistency across the four gospels – except for topics addressing Jesus’ birth, healing miracles, and use of parables. There is much less consistency indicated for the other New Testament and non-canonical writers.

The gospels of Matthew and Luke parallel each other most in content and viewpoint, although there are major differences on views regarding such topics as charity, economics and timing of the kingdom of God, social action and role of women.

Mark and John are more distinctive, varying in outlook from the gospels of Matthew/Luke and from each other. Mark is ambivalent on more topics than the other gospel writers.

Perspectives of James are considerably different from those of Paul. The non-canonical Gospel of Thomas aligns closely with Luke on items such as extensive use of parables, emphasis on charity, and imminence of the kingdom of God. Thomas aligns with Mark in the ambivalence of Jesus’ message and with John with absence of any reference to hell.

As might be expected, the other gospels (outside the accepted New Testament) reflect quite varied approaches in their interpretation of Jesus life and ministry. Of note is the absence of Jesus’ parables, non-acceptance of Gentiles, and the lack of any reference to hell in these non-canonical works.

Nearly 20 centuries of Christian tradition have conditioned us to expect a harmony of the Jesus accounts. The reality is that harmony gives way to dissonance.

Is it any surprise that even modern Christendom presents no unified interpretation – but rather multiple denominations, sects and schisms? But the news is not all necessarily bad.

The Jesus who emerges from these disparate accounts is infinitely more interesting and engaging. Multiple images of this reputed god-man in action capture our attention longer than the single, glazed portrait. Who could ask for more?

Did Jesus Exist? An All Out War Among the Experts

I recently called attention here to the rather spirited response of Thomas Thompson to Bart Ehrman regarding how the so-called “mythicists” are portrayed in his new book,Did Jesus Exist? on the web site Bible and Interpretation. Previously, Thompson’s co-editor, Thomas Verenna had taken Ehrman to task as well on the same site here, asserting:

While Ehrman spends a great deal of time analyzing the evidence, he does so in ways which ignore the more recent critical scholarship which undercuts his entire position. In other words, the case for a historical Jesus is far weaker than Ehrman lets on.

The Jesus of Christian Imagination

Just today Maurice Casey has posted a response to Thomas Thompson, not so much to defend Ehrman, he says, as to point out that Thompson is simply incompetent as a New Testament scholar. His provocative title, “Is Not This an Incompetent New Testament scholar? A Response to Thomas L. Thompson,” is meant to be a play on Thompson’s original post, “Is This Not the Carpenter’s Son?” You don’t want to miss these exchanges. You might also want to take a look at Prof. Casey’s sharp overview of the “mythicist” position here. As John Loftus recently pointed out, there is an “all out war” on this topic bouncing back and forth in the biblioblogosphere, see his post here.

“Jesus, son of Pantera”

About 177 AD the Greek philosopher Celsus, in his book ‘The True Word’, expressed what appears to have been the consensus Jewish opinion about Jesus, that his father was a Roman soldier called Pantera. ‘Pantera’ means Panther and was a fairly common name among Roman soldiers. The rumor is repeated in the Talmud and in medieval Jewish writings where Jesus is referred to as “Yeshu ben Pantera”.

Pantera's gravestone is the one on the left

In 1859 a gravestone surfaced in Germany for a Roman soldier called Tiberius Iulius Abdes Pantera, whose unit Cohors I Sagittariorum had served in Judea before Germany – romantic historians have hypothesized this to be Jesus’ father, especially as ‘Abdes’ (‘servant of God’) suggests a Jewish background.

Tib(erius) Iul(ius) Abdes Pantera
Sidonia ann(orum) LXII
stipen(diorum) XXXX miles exs(ignifer?)
coh(orte) I sagittariorum
h(ic) s(itus) e(st)
Tiberius Iulius Abdes Pantera
from Sidon, aged 62 years
served 40 years, former standard bearer (?)
of the First Cohort of Archers
lies here

The gravestone is now in the Römerhalle museum in Bad Kreuznach, Germany.

It appears this First Cohort of Archers moved from Palestine to Dalmatia in 6 AD, and to the Rhine in 9 AD. Pantera came from Sidon, on the coast of Phoenicia just west of Galilee, presumably enlisted locally. He served in the army for 40 years until some time in the reign of Tiberius. On discharge he would have been granted citizenship by the Emperor (and been granted freedom if he had formerly been a slave), and added the Emperor’s name to his own. Tiberius ruled from 14 AD to 37 AD. Pantera’s 40 years of service would therefore have started between 27 BC and 4 BC.

As Pantera would probably have been about 18 when he enlisted, it means he was likely born between 45 BC and 22 BC. He could have been as old as 38 or as young as 15 at the time of Jesus’ conception in the summer of 7 BC.

In 6 AD when Jesus was 12, Judas of Galilee led a popular uprising that captured Sepphoris, the capital of Galilee. The uprising was crushed by the Romans some four miles north of Nazareth. It is possible (and appealing to lovers of historical irony) that Pantera and Joseph fought on opposite sides. As Joseph is never heard of again he may well have been killed in the battle, or have been among the 2,000 Jewish rebels crucified afterwards.

So Tiberius Iulius Abdes Pantera is indeed a possibility as Jesus’ father. The only thing we know for certain is that Mary’s husband Joseph wasn’t the father, and that Mary was already pregnant when they married. It could have been rape, or Mary may have been a wild young teen who fell for a handsome man in a uniform, even if he was part of an occupying army. It happens.
